I spend this last weekend schmoozing and posing (my work that is) for a Dances of Vice private brunch event which was filmed for the upcoming NHK documentary following the New York steampunk scene.  The event, organized by Shien Lee of Dances of Vice, was a great success, incredibly fun and full of thrilling fashion and artistic eye-candy.  I was able to share the spotlight with some great artists, cabaret musician VOLTAIRE, steampunk inspired fashion artist-designer KRISTIN COSTAand extraordinary steampunk designer BERIT NYC, as well  PUREVILE!  who always has a slew of delicious accessories!

The documentary will air in Japan in September so more updates on that are soon to follow.  Thanks again to all that participated and attended!

I will be showing a new piece, “A Hypothetical Lineage” in the Arlington Art Center group show, PARADOX NOW! I was very impressed by the work  on display at the opening and feel privileged to be part of such a fantastic show.  My personal favorite was the work of A. Clark Bedford, who put together an absorbing re-creation of his living room in the gallery.  The piece, if it can be called a piece, was a mish-mash of odd objects, collections, reproductions, spoofs, sculptures, stacked and layered on top of eachother, with persian rugs, furniture and accessories thrown in.  Part steam-punk, part mad scientist and completely up my alley!
If you are in the Washington area, check it out.

So as no one thinks I have been completely care-free for the last 12 months since I posted, I have actually been up to my eyeballs in work! There were a few shows here and there, but most of my time has been spent preparing for this year’s Society of North American Goldsmith’s annual conference which will occur here, in Philadelphia.  My task has been to coordinate the Student Show, which has been a highlight of the conference for years.  I participated in the show as a students several times in he past and have had the privilege of putting the show together this year.  Maybe privilege isn’t the right word, although it has been a lot of fun, very enlightening and sometimes inspiring, as I have now experienced the good, bad and ugly of exhibition coordination.  The show, however, will be great, and for that I can thank the awesome applicants!

For those attending the conference, the show will be held at the Loews Hotel, on 13th and Market, in the Millennium Ballroom. (how regal!) For those who are not attending, well, you wont get to see the show as it is sequestered away and you must have conference passes check it out, BUT I will post some images here when the show is up and running.

Here we go! The work is done, for the most part, and the install is about to begin! I will be exhibiting some new work plus some revamped work from last year.  The installation explores the surreal experience of memory.  I reference museology, cabinets of curiosity, victorian sensibility and folklore while I relate personal stories through objects and images.  I hope you all can make it to the opening!  If not, the show will be up untill May 31st at the Arlington Arts Center.  Also, check back for images on the blog and in my website gallery.

Happy New Year!

Who thought the year could start off so busy! Right now, as I am writing, I am all laid-up with a sprained ankle which is keeping me from the studio. YUCK! Once I do get back on my feet I have a lot to prepare for!
First off, in my hiatus, I have added some new images of recent work to the website including some tintypes. I am finishing up a new piece which will, hopefully, be included in an upcoming solo show at the Arlington Art Center, in Arlington VA. The opening for the show, which will feature most of the History Revealed series as well as some other work, will be held on April 8, 2008. I will post more on that as the date approaches, but as for now, I have my work cut out for me.

If anyone will be in the Baltimore area during the American Craft Council show from Feb. 17-24, my piece “Dancing Dress for a Legless Girl” will be exhibited at the show in conjunction with and exhibit of student work from Virginia Commonwealth University. Lastly, I have 2 pieces traveling to a group show in Chicago at the Woman Made Gallery. The “Memento Mori” and “Replacement Liver” will be on show during the month of march. Also in March, I will be traveling to Las Vegas to attend the TransWorld Haunted House Trade Show as an assistant to the research team at Safari Anomalous , a very exciting proposition as I get to help in promoting the new discoveries for 2008, plus meet some really eclectic characters and animatronic buffs.

Oh and did I mention that I got a dog?!!

Hi Everyone,
Sorry I have been a little absent lately with my blog! So much to do these days! First off, anyone in a holiday shopping mood should check out the White Marsh Art Center for their holiday craft show, open November 30th through December 2nd, with a special preview part on November 29th.   I will have some new jewelry there and will also be posting some jewelry on my website.  This is my frist foray into the commercial jewelry world after some long years of sculpture…the change is interesting, and nice….wish me luck!

Beginning on October 26th, the Ethical Metalsmiths Organization will kick off its 2nd annual Radical Jewelry Makeover, this year in Lancaster PA in association with Millersville University.  Last year the totally RAD makeover took over Richmond VA at Virginia Commonwealth University, and as a part of the graduate art community there I was happy to take part.

What is this RADness you ask?  The Radical Jewelry Makeover is a workshop designed by Christina Miller and Susan Kingsley (both metalsmiths extraordinaire) who started the organization in 2004 to help make the public aware of the origins and environmental cost of the gold they so happily wear.  The organization has made great strides in helping the metalsmith community cope with the environmental toll our trade takes on the world.  Through education and promoting good mining practices, the organization helped SNAG (familiar to all us metalsmiths in the world) -Society of North American Goldsmiths – adopt its No Dirty Gold policy.
The Makeover, a brainchild of the organization founders, is a workshop designed to educate university metalsmithing programs (community programs as well) about the work of the Ethical Metalsmiths while also allowing the students to work creatively and give a project back to the community. During the one week extravaganza, jewelry is donated by community members for the project. The donations can be everything from wedding bands to grandma’s atrocious costume jewelry from ‘32 to something you picked up for 5 cents at the Salvation Army. All the donations are sorted and the result is a compilation of hundreds of items from which the students can use to re-create new RADICAL jewelry. No rules except the stones, metal, findings etc all should come from old jewelry. In the end, the students put together a gallery exhibition of all the work, also putting it up for sale to the general public. Also, everyone that donates is able to return to the exhibition at the end of the week to re-claim a new piece of jewelry to take in place of the submissions they left behind. This year, I am happy to help out with the Millersville edition, taking some time off work (well, a weekend) to see my VCU professor and friend Susie Ganch and pitch in to the radness. If you are interested in donating, please follow the link to the Ethical Metalsmiths to download a form…Time is almost up!! AND you’ll get good karma and jewelry for it.

Orinally from Alaska, Erin Williams received her BFA from Syracuse University and her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2007.  Her work has been shown in a variety of venues, from California to Georgia.  She currently resides in Philadelphia, maintaining a full-time studio while passing any extra time teaching Jewelry and Metalsmithing classes at the Main Line Art Center in Haverford PA, and walking dogs.  Her work deals with the idiosyncrasies of emotion, the psychology of health, life, death and the human experience portrayed in a whimsical attitude.  The work is macabre, silly, and full of story.  For images and more information see her website at
